CHAPTER 12

***ROCKY***

The meeting wore on for two more hours. As I answered questions, I realized that I’d have to speak again in front of the gathering of my own clan. My village should have the same information as the wolves. I pondered how to go about this even as I spoke of Pandora’s crow, what she witnessed that fateful day we saw one another again, the dead moose and grizzly.

“That’s all for now,” Luther called. “Once we’ve created a plan, we’ll meet once again. Disperse to your homes; I think we have another storm on the way.”

I glanced up at the lowering sky, the dark clouds amassing overhead. The tall peaks high above us had already vanished into swirling gray mist. I turned to Luther.

“If someone will watch over Pandora, I’ll report to my clan.”

He, too, looked at the sky. “It’s late, Rocky. Don’t go until after this passes.”

“The longer my people go without information, the greater the risk to them.”

“I don’t like it,” he growled. “Pandora needs you. And you yourself said that venturing from the village after dark could mean death.”

“Do as I say, not as I do,” I commented with a grin.

Luther wasn’t amused. “I wish I had authority to forbid you,” he grumbled. “I don’t. I’ll have someone trustworthy to look after Pandora. And if you get killed, help us from beyond the void.”

“I’ll be fine. The storm is a few hours away. I’ll be home by then.”

“It’s not the storm that worries me.”

“The beast is a long way from here.”

“So you hope.”

I got the same argument from Pandora when I informed her of what I needed to do.

“Stay here tonight,” she growled. “Travel tomorrow, under daylight. Your clan will be safe enough until then.”

“And if someone ventures out and gets killed?” I asked. “That’s on me. My people need the same information yours has.”

“Look at the weather,” she shrieked, bringing Lacey to tears, jabbing her finger at the window. “No one will go out in this storm, Rocky. You’re risking your life for nothing.”

“Am I?” I glared. “It’s a damn fifteen miles. I can be there in an hour. Once home, I’m safe. And my people will know more about this monster out there.”

“What difference will twenty-four hours make?” she yelled. “Your people will be in their homes next to fires, eating dinner by the time you get there.”

“And if they aren’t?” I snapped. “And if some kids want to play in the snow? And this thing kills them?”

“You’re an attractive target.” She stalked toward me and jabbed her finger in my chest. “You’re big. It likes to kill big critters. It toyed with me because I wasn’t worth it. And you know this for a fact.”

“Maybe you’re right, and maybe you’re not. I have a duty to protect my own.”

“At my expense?” Tears glittered in her pale, icy eyes. “And make Lacey an orphan?”

“I have to go.”

I kissed her brow, then Lacey’s. “I’ll be back after I’ve talked to my elders.”

“You won’t because you’ll be spattered all over the snow.
